Niklaus Wenger (*1978) long worked primarily with concrete, using sculptural experiments to explore the tension between materiality and perception. Through carefully crafted wooden formwork, he created reduced, Minimal Art–like forms that questioned representation, as concrete surfaces sometimes appeared like wood. In Out in the Woods, an ensemble of concrete columns and L-shaped plaster forms—referencing the rational visual language of the Zurich Concrete artists presented in the same room —was arranged in a grid. The focus on surface structure, materiality, and form made the tension between rational order and material irregularity tangible, linking geometric rigor with an open, ambiguous experience of space.
CARAVAN was an exhibition series at the Aargauer Kunsthaus that invited emerging Swiss artists to present site-specific interventions. Each exhibition was accompanied by a published booklet.
