Passing Through evokes the varied gaits and rhythms of New York in fourteen literary portraits and photographic snapshots. For some, New York has been home for decades; others dipped into the city for only days or months. On a single day in autumn 2018, each of them let us share their everyday experiences. At times at high speed, the paths led through the East or West Village, along Broadway, from Harlem to Midtown, from Chelsea across the Upper West Side and on to Brooklyn and Queens. Out into a world in which one can, even at the margins, at times feel at the center. The rattling of the subway and the wail of sirens were followed by moments of quiet and retreat. Taxi rides, haste, and density met idleness and deceleration in parks and at home. Step by step and day by day, aspects of the city unfolded, filtered through the eyes of the artists gathered here. They take center stage and embody the many ways New York can be seen, experienced, and lived.
